One key piece of camping gear is the sleeping bag. It is a source of both comfort and insulation for a weary camper. There are several things to consider when choosing a sleeping bag for a camping trip.

First, match the bag to the kind of weather that will be encountered on a camping trip. Sleeping bag temperature ratings can be grouped into summer, 3-season, and winter. For camping temperatures of 30 degrees or higher a summer temperature rating is ideal. Three-season bags are for temperatures ranging from 15 to 30 degrees. For camping trips in temperatures below 15 degrees, a sleeping bag with a winter temperature rating would be best.

Looking at sleeping bag shapes, they can be grouped into two styles: roomy or snug. Roomy sleeping bags allow for freedom of movement. Snug sleeping bags retain more warmth than roomier sleeping bags. The mummy-style sleeping bag is the warmest kind of sleeping bag available, followed by the semi-rectangular bag. The classic rectangular sleeping bag is a roomy bag, and so is the double bag, which is good for couples.

Sleeping bag insulation can be either synthetic or down. Synthetic insulation is the more cost-effective option, and is also a good choice for people with allergies because it is non-allergenic. Synthetics are also better able to resist damp weather, and will dry out quickly if they become wet. Down insulation is more durable and packs easier. It is good for camping trips in cold, dry weather, but the down should be treated if it will be used in damp or wet conditions.
